Under Emperor Claudius II, during the 3rd century AD, an era when the order of the day was war
Someone, against all odds, did the thing we all now adore
At such a time, when politics was paramount to the government’s constitution
He followed his conscience and promoted true love among couples in line with the marital institution
In the same period, the government saw the organization of christian marriages as a taboo
Yet, he kept conducting holy matrimonies against the threat of meeting an ironic waterloo
Eventually, the government had him apprehended and executed
But at the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared 14th February as the Saint Valentine’s Day and this turned him to a martyr whose name will never be neglected
Valentine was his name and the promotion of true love, until his last breath, remained his aim
Have the happy and lovely Saint Valentine’s Day!
DO YOU HONOUR VALENTINE’S MEMORY WITH LUST, FRIVOLITY OR TRUE LOVE?
